Until the first half of the twentieth century, the mimeograph machine was regarded a media key  by the Americans. It allowed the proliferation of the independent press. In 1955 a group of women, The Daughters of Bilitis, who fought for the rights of lesbian, printed the magazine mimeographed The Ladder. People used the mimeograph to produce messages to their own belonging group, often in opposition to authority.
