Barren land, slender trees and the warm light of the early morning hours make this photograph of Mount Bromo image that manages to hit the observer and transmit peace and serenity. It sounds like a Martian show. The sands of the Sea of Sand is tinged with red as the slopes of the mountain.
The term "Bromo" which gave its name to the volcano comes from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the creator god for Hindus.
The volcano and its neighbor are part of a protected area called Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park that attracts thousands of tourists to this part of the island of Java. During the Yadnya Kasada festival (August) the local population is used to launch the food ringraziarsi the mountain deity. The tradition dates back to a 15th century legend: a couple of principles without children would ask the gods of the mountains Tengger her conception. The god of the volcano Bromo appease them with the birth of 24 children, as long as the two threw the 25th born in the volcano as a human sacrifice. The request of the deity was answered.

A detail of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

It's declared a national park in 1982 and it is located in East Java (Indonesia) to the east of Malang and to the southeast of Surabaya. It is the only conservation area in Indonesia that has a sand sea, across which is the caldera of an ancient volcano (Tengger) from which four new volcanic cones have emerged. This unique feature covers a total area of 5,250 hectares. The massif also contains the highest mountain in Java, Mount Semeru (about 3,700 m), 4 lakes, 50 rivers and the volcano Bromo (it's the one smoking in the picture). The Bromo is an active volcano and its summit is about 2,400 meters s.l.m.. The last eruption was in November 2011.

Its name is derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the creator god of Hinduism.
