Retro photography of the thirties of the nineteenth century. Athens, Piraeus. Different Fiat Balilla were exposed to the streets. The picture tells moments of serenity and calm that contrasts with the history of the Hellenic Country of the Twenties and Thirties. In 1924 the Second Hellenic Republic was declared following the referendum of 1924. Even if Greek population has voted for a new Republic, the political situation remained in a deep instability. In fact, years later were characterized by series of ineffectual military governments. The Thirties were opened with the serious global economic crisis due to the collapse of 1929 and the return of Venizelos exiled in 1935. King George II ascended to power dethroned on August 4th, 1936 by the coup of General Ioannis Metaxas who established a dictatorship of fascist, emulation of Italian Mussolini regime: jail political opponents and for the communists, abolition of any political party, censorship of all media. Metaxas established different popular measures such as the working day of eight hours, established the social security fund of Greek (still active today) and improved the defenses of the country. Despite all its efforts, the general never had the approval of the Greek people who quietly kept moving politically to the left.
