Rialto Bridge retro photography of the beginning of XX. Built in 1559 by architect Antonio da Ponte, the bridge was until 1584 the only way to walk across the Grand Canal. The work consists of a single arch 22 meters high. Here it is photographed the arch side facing the Academy decorated with the engraving of Agostino Rubini with the Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin and a dove in the center. A local legend has it that the Devil himself put in an appearance during the building of the bridge, threatening that work would never be completed if he was not promised the first living soul to cross the bridge. The architect, Antonio da Ponte, accepted, thinking to outsmart the Devil by having a cockerel be the first to cross Rialto. But, having got wind of the trick, Satan appeared at the architect’s house and told his pregnant wife her husband was waiting for her at the worksite. The wife was thus the first to cross the bridge, and tradition has it that the soul of the infant.
