“What artists do not face any opposition in walking, watching, contemplating the figures and buildings that may want to draw or copy; or staring at scaffolding around the ancient temple; or in modeling with chalk or lime the said ornaments and visible figures; or to dig when they deem it necessary, in search of inscriptions among the debris scattered on the ground. Nor hinder them to deduct any fragment of stone with inscriptions and figures." So he pronounced Lord Elgin on the debate on the Parthenon in 1798.

The story of the Parthenon marbles is the most thorny issue of art history, even today, the subject of argument between Greece and the United Kingdom. The first calling for the restitution of marble and all the Acropolis archaeological finds illegally stolen by the English Lord while the second one appeals to history by recalling that in the 1810 Athens is under control by Turkish authorities in the same year Lord Elgin obtains a firman by which first begin the first coming off the metopes, triglyphs and statues from the temple of Athena.
