Panorama of the Port of San Remo at the end of the nineteenth century. In the foreground sailing boats to a single tree in the background the Pigna, the hill on which the city was built. The eighteenth-century French writer Charles de Brosses described the old town of San Remo: "Attractive town, built on a sugar loaf". The name derives from the Pigna strange orographic scales in the hill or simply the result of the presence carved on the fountain in front of St. Joseph's Church.
