Historical picture of Genoa in the nineteenth century. Here portrayed Piazza del Principe decorated with flower beds, palm trees, wrought iron lamps and the monument to the Duke Galliera erected in 1896 in memory of his gift in favor of the port of Genoa. The Duke gave twenty gold million order to build two large jetties and a group of apartment blocks destined to the most needy workers. The sculptural group was made up of a granite pedestal on which rested the medallion with the portrait of the Duke of Galliera and the coat of arms of the city of Genoa. He towered the allegorical group with the personification of Commerce, Navigation and Charities. In 1932 the monument was moved from Piazza del Principe to Via Fanti of Italy and since 1999 has kept gardens in the municipal deposit of San Quirico.
